“God, help me to want the life that you want for me.”
How we got here…
Our little cabin in the woods, built in the late 1800s.
I remember the first time I prayed that prayer. I was scared to even say the words. I knew that what God wanted for me likely wasn’t what I wanted. But, I had faith that His plan is the best plan, and so I said it. I prayed that prayer every day, and I continue it now. But, since praying that prayer, my life has definitely changed... I have changed.
I would have never thought I would end up homeschooling; and to be completely honest, if you would have told me a year ago what we would be doing today, I would have thought you were crazy. Not because I had anything against homeschooling, but because I didn’t think I would be capable. Not of the teaching part, but of handling the mental load. But, God has a way of changing our hearts.
It was spring 2025 - I sat in my backyard and cried. Time was passing too fast. My children were growing up. I felt like I hadn’t savored any of it. I felt like I was on a rollercoaster and I needed it to stop. We bought a cabin in the woods - a get away. A place for us to reconnect with nature. A place to reconnect with each other. I should have known then what I was being called to do. I immediately felt at home in that cabin - in nature. I craved the more simple life.
Time went on and we continued about our life, but cherishing the moments we had together in our cabin, where we could slow down and enjoy the little things.
We moved into a new home, and it wasn’t until we were settled in that it happened.
One day, I had this thought, this feeling like “I should homeschool”. I was shocked… I prayed about it so much. Are you serious, God? I don’t think this is for me. Don’t you see how stressed I get? I need less responsibilities, not more.
But I couldn’t shake it. The feeling was so strong. I was scared to even tell my husband about it, because I thought he would think I’d lost my mind. Of course that was not his reaction. He responded with care and interest, understanding that usually when I get a calling like that, it needs to be addressed.
So, we prayed together, talked with our family priest and waited. We asked God to make things clear to us, and he did. So, when the time came to mention it to our children, we were nervous. We had made a lot of big moves lately and we really thought they would push back. But, to our surprise and relief, they were very open and optimistic about the idea. So that was it. We decided to take the plunge.
We are taking it one year at a time and will continue to listen to God’s calling. But I must say, it’s already been such a blessing to our family. I can see how He is working in our lives and I feel so blessed to have this opportunity to homeschool my children.
